Are the courts ready for modernisation? Are lawyers?
Recent years have seen a number of changes in the legal system with a move to making the process far more digital. With the electronic lodging of documents will law firms be making a move to becoming paperless? Perhaps not quite yet. If a case proceeds to proof paper copies of all productions still require to be lodged. Progress is being made, but there is still a way to go. Will lawyers be able to keep up...? Time will tell.
HMCTS are investing £1 billion in their seven-year reform programme to modernise the courts and tribunals system. The programme aims to create services that are digital by default and design including digitising paper-based services, moving cases online, court closures, introducing virtual hearings, and centralising customer services.
